My Headpiece - Inspired by Kate Spade S/S 2016

I was highly inspired by the Kate Spade New York presentation for my headdress. "After a harsh winter, when that first day of spring breaks, how relieved we all are to buy our first flowers at the bodega,”. That feeling was evident in the clothes of the kate spade s/s 2016 collection. Flowers were everywhere, mostly in patterns. There were florets in grayscale shades splattered onto an A-line skirt, and in abstract black and white on a shift dress; delicate daisies dotted a slouchy jumpsuit. The subtle outline of blossoms were beautifully placed onto the hem and neckline of the yellow dresses. There was a charming white sequin shift dress, striped in candied tones of pastel rose, sunflower, royal blue, and apricot. These all brought inspiration for my headdress. After looking through S/S 2016 collections with flowers seeing as my chosen theme is day of the dead and is known to have plenty on flowers, This collection stood out to me most.

After looking through the Kate Spade collection, I decided to pick flower colours such as different shades of pink, purple and white/cream. I used white/cream for the main colour theme accompanied by the colourful flowers all around to give it a summer festival feel. Day of the dead is a happy festival even though some of the traditional 'day of the dead' makeup is scary, it is still a 'happy' day. I feel like a white base for my character will make that show through. Dark isn't really my thing. I made a long flowy Mexican tiered skirt and pairing it with a flattering tight corset, Attaching colourful flowers around to give it more life. My characters makeup reflects the traditional day of the dead happy skull, however it is definitely made to be prettier and interpreted in my own way. The Roman Goddess flora came to mind when creating my large flower headdress. This will give my character life as flowers are beautiful and a massive headdress made out of colourful flowers against a white base will definitely stand out. I love Pat Mcgraths colourful makeup. I definitely used some of her images for colour inspiration for my characters makeup. I want my character to walk down the catwalk looking 'unimpressed' however with lots of movement. This will reflect on the 'skull' / dead part of the day of the dead theme. However it will be eye catching as she will be wearing light and 'happy' colours rather than black / dark colours!
