1920s Updo Perfect for a film - more fashion.

The finger waved hair style was made popular in the 1920's as a fancy way to style the very modern and wildly popular bob hairstyle of the era.Back in the 1920's hair styling tools weren't exactly what we know today, so back then they were created with wet hair, a load of hair gel, and fingers. You can still create them that way, if you have a great amount of skill.

"FINGER WAVING is the shaping or moulding of hair while wet into "s"-shaped curved undulations with the fingers and comb. These waves, when dried without being disturbed, will fall into beautiful deep waves. Not only naturally curly or permanently waved hair can be finger waved, but it is equally successful on straight hair."

Holly showed us this by Sectioning the hair out at the back in a triangle shape followed by securing it in a low pony tail and plaiting it up. Once that is done then twist it into a low tight bun. Part the front of the hair in a side parting. Clip the side of the hair with most hair. Take horizontal sections and twist them. Make them all follow the same way. Once all the sections are heated up and curled, then start to create the S shape. It should all flow however if they don't show clearly then try using a curling wand instead.

Over all i'm quite happy with the way the Hair turned out seeing as I am not confident with hair and it was my first time doing something so complicated. Next time I would've just mafe the finger waves more pushed up in order to give them a more defined look.

During the twenties cream or ivory coloured face powder was used by most women. Later in the middle of the twenties a powder corresponding to the nature hue of skin - perhaps a nuance brighter - came in fashion. For rouge the colours rose, raspberry, and around 1925 also orange were popular.

From the middle of the twenties on lips were coloured in deep red, deep brownish reds, plum and orange. The shades changed later at the end of the twenties. Colours like rose, raspberry and medium red were new trend.

Lipstick was applied as a "Cupid's-Bow" to the upper lip. Also the lower lip was exaggerated a bit.

Usually eyes were held quite dark. To get this effect the whole eye was edged with a black eyeliner and then the margins blurred easily. The eyelid shadow was mostly dark. Besides grey, colours like turquoise and green were also in fashion. To further emphasis the eyes, eyelashes were also black.

Therefore Generally Heavily outlined eyes, Thin eyebrows and the Cupid's bow lips were the trend of the 1920s.

My Work

Overall I feel like I managed to pull the look together. The eyebrows worked perfectly and the blush suited her skin tone great. I did find it hard on such dark skin as the eyeshadow didn't seem to work as well. However, I made it suitable for her.

Products used -

Foundation - Mac Full coverage foundation shade NW40

Blush - Frankly scarlet by Mac

Eyes - Mac carbon eyeshadow

Eyebrows - Mac deep dark brunette + Mac prolong wear black eyeliner (brows blocked out slightly with the derma palette in the shades D16 + D14)

Lips - Mac lipliner in the shade Cherry and Mac lipstick dare you.

I feel like I could have used a matte lipstick in a darker shade to made this look even more 20s however I didn't have one on me. Also I would have rounded up the lips to more of a cupids bow shape however I found it quite hard to change the shape as her lips are very big / defined.

I then tried this look again to practice and I changed it up a little using another picture as reference.
