Retro hairstyles

This lesson we created some 1940s pin-up inspired hair styles. My idead was inspired by the image below of Rita Hayworth however seeing as I had never done this below and it looks pretty difficult.. I didnt have high expectations.

For many women, creating pin up hairstyles is an exciting way to capture the feminine essence of a bygone era. Pin up styles with a modern flair can be recreated with a few hair products and tools.

Few eras are as iconic as the 1940s and the 1950s as far as hair is concerned. With pin curls, finger waves, victory rolls, and exaggerated bangs still in vogue, pin up hairstyles were playful and flirtatious. Vintage looks are all about volume, wave and curl. While these looks take some time to create, the volume allows the set to be worn for several days.

Products I used to create this look

  • hot rollers

  • Mousse

  • Hairspray

  • Tail comb

  • Back comb

Hair pins

I started off this look by applying hot rollers all over the hair. I placed the rollers in bottom section (spit into 2) going upwards. The middle section was then also split into 3 and the rollers went inwards so that the rollers went under the hair. The side two sections went upwards just like the bottom back section. After around 25 minutes I removed the rollers. Below was the result.

I feel like the curls didn't turn out as well as I wished them to and I could have left them in for atleast another 15 minutes however it wasn't such a big deal seeing as we were creating an upstyle afterwards. I started off by taking the middle section, backcombing it and rolling it inwards followed by pinning it to place. I then took the bottom section and rolled in upwards. some sections were falling out however I used bobby pins to hold it in place. It did'nt turn out perfect but seeing as it's quite difficult and I've never done anything like this before, It didn't turn out bad. I did the same with the front two sections. They turned out quite good however next time I would have definitely tried to make them tighter so that they would be neater and closer to the head rather than popping far out.

Below is my final look. I really enjoyed this challenge and I will definitely be trying it out again.

I then tried out a 1940s makeup for fun at home. I also added a dew pinned back curls with some waves in my hair. I added brown hair spray all over my hair and bright green contact lenses just for fun. Below is the look ;
