ELLE - My chosen Magazine
ELLE, in 1945, stood out from other French magazines. Its founder, Hélène Gordon-Lazareff, created an original magazine, putting the emphasis on article-writing and images. It was different from the model of Vogue US. ELLE was an adaptation of newspapers with more in-depth news content. The international character of Hélène Gordon-Lazareff permeated the magazine from the very first issue. Of Russian origin, she brought from her exile in the United States another idea and a new point of view to the press. Her innovative touch went as far as the layout of her magazine; she lightened the texts and the images, giving it a more luxurious feel, with a new – at least, in France at that time - relationship between articles and images, in particular regarding the use of colour.
One of ELLE's first front covers

ELLE was created after the Second World War and in the 1980s became a brand, first of all in paper format, and a little later in digital format, relayed by applications and a video platform. The magazine is one of the top, high-quality, women’s periodicals, and enjoys an international audience. For more than sixty five years, ELLE magazine has been attracting advertisers and has adjusted to the fluctuating markets of its female readership and of advertising.

ELLE tarfets young woman aged 16-30, interested in the latest fashion and beauty trends. The advertisements in the magazine are generally fashion and beauty brands advertising latest products or fashion lined aimed at females, so the reader would have to be earning money with disposable income to purchase any of the products. Articles in the magazine focus generally on appearance, with topics ranging from excercise workouts to the latest fashion must haves.

ELLE is my chosen magazine for this project of designing a cover for my chosen publication. I will be designing it in my own way based around the SS16 trends keeping in mind the way Elle shoots the photos in order to keep their theme and make it look as real as can be. For example, from most of the covers i've seen, the models seem to be facing completely front or with a slight turn in the face, all with fierce looking facial expressions. Also, All backgrounds seem to be kept simple. I will take note of all these little things when creating the shoot.
